Often, even a great deal on a new car just doesn't fit into the family budget. But that's OK. Keeping your current vehicle running efficiently is a sensible alternative. To help ensure reliability and safety, and to extend the life of your vehicle, the Car Care Council recommends these preventative maintenance steps:
- Change the oil and filter every 3,000 or 5,000 mles, as per the owner's manual. Use quality oil and filters to keep your engine components clean. This is the single most important thing you can do for your engine!
- Check the tire pressure at least monthly, including the spare. Tires affect not only the comfort of the ride, but handling, traction, and safety as well.
- Schedule an annual tune-up. A well-tuned engine delivers the best balance of power and fuel economy and produces the lowest level of emissions.
- Have the alignment checked at least annually. Potholies and normal wear and tear can take their toll on your car's steering and suspension. A wheel alignment reduces tire wear, improves fuel economy and handling and increases safety.
- Check all belts and hoses every six months. Also inspect the windshield wipers and lights.
