Mardi Gras Originated in Mobile, Alabama 01/27/2010
![]() Did you know that Mobile, Alabama is the birthplace of Mardi Gras? Most people automatically assume its history began in New Orleans, but Mardi Gras actually began in Mobile over 300 years ago and today is known as "America's Family Mardi Gras" because it's one of the safest celebrations in the world and appropriate for all ages. The best part of Mardi Gras is the parades! Brilliantly colored floats motor slowly down the streets and costumed riders toss "throws" to the enthusiastic crowds. Favored "throws" are beaded necklaces in the traditional colors of green, gold, and purple, moon pies, candy, plastic doubloons, moon pies, stuffed animals, and more moon pies! The best way to get the most throws is to get yourself noticed— wave your hands in the air, jump up and down, yell, and catch the eye of a thrower on the float. The folks on the floats wear such fun and festive Mardi Gras costumes. Mardi Gras is February 16 this year, so make the most of it by throwing a party before then, because at the stroke of midnight, all the merriment vanishes to make way for Lent. Until then...
